5 steps to changing your name in India

1. Decide on new name
2. Organise a name change affidavit duly attested by first class Magistrate / Oath Commissioner at the court.
3. Place an ad in one local daily newspaper announcing the name change.
4. Apply for a change of name in all government documents ( Voter ID , PAN Card , passport , driving licence and bank accounts ). Copies of the affidavit and the paper notification along with application ( attested by class 1 gazetted officers ) have to be submitted to concerned authorities.
5. Depending on the advertorial rates of leading dailies, the entire process should cost you around Rs 3000, and could take close to nine months.
